Chapter Nine

“The bookshop is safe?” I said to Gwen on FaceTime, lounging on the chair in the library. This room was my favorite spot to relax in the Manor for obvious reasons. Old books always held a faint vanilla scent, and Killian had a whole room full of them.

Gwen nodded, leaning against the counter in the shop. “There was a little damage to the front of the shop, but Killian sent a crew over. It’s all fixed up now.”

“Thank the Goddess,” I breathed. “How about the rest of downtown?”

“Some places got hit pretty bad,” Gwen explained, before waving to a customer who obviously left the shop. Her eyes flicked back to me. “But the workers down here are cleaning things up quickly. How many were taken to jail?”

Vampire jail wasn’t like human jail. They were being held in the dungeons below the Manor and would soon be taken to the Citadel to await their trials. “Ten, I believe. The rest stood down pretty quickly."

Gwen snorted. “Not true followers of Ezra then, just following the mob.”

“Yeah, that’s what Killian thought.” I paused. Concern churning my belly. “You’ll call if anything happens? Don’t be brave or anything, just call.”

“Stop worrying,” Gwen said, waving me off. “Everything is quiet and the only vamps coming in the shop are buying books to escape this madness.”

“Okay,” I said, feeling marginally better. “Love you.”

“Love ya back,” Gwen smiled. “Talk tomorrow.”

The call ended, and right as I stared at a black screen, Killian’s smooth voice slid through my mind.

“Come to bed.”

I’d heard him come upstairs a while ago when I’d been talking to Gwen, but he must have had enough of vampires for the day. I rose and then held out my finger to the bird, who quickly perched himself on my hand. I still wasn’t sure what to do about him.

The moment I entered our suite, Killian, stood at the open balcony doors, a telling sign that Ambrose had just left to fly.

He took one look at me, the bird, and frowned. “Do we have another pet?”

“Oh, don’t worry about him,” I said, glancing to the chirping bird. “I might have broken into his little brain and I can’t break out of it.”

Killian frowned. “Come again?”

I chuckled at his bemused expression and quickly filled him in on everything that happened during training with Zara. “It appears I have a glamour superpower,” I said, stopping in front of him so he could take a good look at the bird.

“Not a bad ability to have, as long as you never do that to me.” He studied the bird. “Typically, with glamour, you just have to disconnect your mind from the glamour.”

“I think that’s easier said than done.”

His eyes positively glowed. “I bet I could get your mind on other things.”

“Ooh,” I purred, leaning into him. “A tempting offer.”

The side of his mouth curved sensually as he grabbed on to the front of my shirt, pulling me in for a kiss. His lips were soft and welcoming and exactly what I needed.
